A 25-year-old Catholic policeman who'd just joined the Northern Ireland police force was killed by a car bomb in the town of Omagh. Both police and politicians blamed the Irish Republican Army dissidents who have been targeting Catholics who join the Northern Ireland police force. Building Catholic support for the Protestant-dominated police force is part of the Northern Ireland peace process. Both Catholic and Protestant community leaders condemned the attack.
