Perhaps privacy never was a thing of the past. New reports have surfaced that show J. Edgar Hoover's FBI in 1964 investigated the sexuality of Jack Valenti, then a top aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson and later the president of the Motion Picture Association of America. The married Valenti's friendship with a male photographer who, according to an FBI memo, "had the reputation for being a homosexual," was investigated by Republican Party operatives to determine if Valenti was gay (which he was not), reports The Washington Post. President Johnson approved the inquiry of his friend, which included interviews with acquaintances and backgrounds checks—yet another example of J. Edgar Hoover's persistent fascination with personal lives.
