Rising Democratic star Wendy Davis has officially become the first female gubernatorial nominee in Texas since former Governor Ann Richards in 1994. Republicans are grappling with mixed results in establishment versus Tea Party primaries; Lt. Governor David Dewhurst was forced into a runoff with Senator Ted Cruz-backed state Senator Dan Patrick, who declared that “In Texas, we will show the rest of the country what it means to be conservative.” Back in 2012, Cruz beat Dewhurst in a Republican primary for Senate by portraying him as too establishment. However the Tea Party failed to unseat both Senator John Cornyn and Representative Pete Sessions, two longtime politicians with deep ties in Washington.
