Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have asked NATO to permanently allocate troops within their borders, out of fears of an increasingly threatening Russia. “It is necessary because of the security situation,” said Latvian defense spokesman Capt. Mindaugas Neimontas. “It’s not getting better in our region, so it will be a deterrent.” The nations are requesting 700 to 800 troops be placed in each country. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the requests will be “assessed carefully.”
