A fast-moving wildfire tore through northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday, destroying homes and forcing tens of thousands to flee. The Hawk Fire grew to more than 23 square miles across the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, with zero containment. Authorities ordered about 42,000 people to evacuate as the “GO NOW” zone expanded toward the University of Nevada. Another 45,000 were under evacuation warnings. “Please get out if you can right now,” Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said. Six people, including three first responders, were injured in the blaze, which officials said was “human-caused.” It came as gusty winds fueled “extreme fire behavior” in Nevada over the weekend. On Saturday alone, 15 separate blazes were reported across the state. “The wind really blew it up,” resident Tyler Duvall told The Associated Press. More than 10,000 people were without power Sunday evening. Months of dry weather and record-low snow across the West have left conditions ripe for wildfires.

A young pilot survived a terrifying mid-air crisis by executing a controlled emergency landing just off a crowded Florida beach. Faith Tenkley, 23, was flying to the Bahamas to pick up her parents when her dual-engine plane suffered severe mechanical failure roughly 15 miles off Boca Raton. Facing a broken landing gear and an engine failure, she elected to ditch the aircraft in open water rather than risk a fire by bringing down the heavily fueled aircraft on land. She expertly guided the descending plane into shallow waters, dodging beachgoers and swimmers before paddling safely to shore as onlookers watched in awe. “After deciding a landing at Boca Raton Airport was not the safest option, I continued to the coast. During the descent, my primary focus was ensuring the safety of everyone around me,” Tenkley said. “I was able to navigate toward open water, successfully avoiding all nearby buildings, paddleboarders, and swimmers (as well as individuals using metal detectors). I am incredibly fortunate and relieved to share that I was able to swim away from this incident.” Emergency crews later retrieved the submerged aircraft, and authorities are investigating the mechanical failure.

Police have reprimanded a father who left his “tired” seven-year-old son alone on Japan’s Mount Fuji for several hours while the family continued to hike. A worker spotted the boy sitting alone at a hut around 8,200 feet above sea level, which is over halfway up Japan’s tallest mountain, on Thursday and called the police. Authorities said the boy was hiking with his father and older brother, and was told to “wait here” at the hut when he became “tired” and did not want to hike any further. Japanese network TV Asahi said the boy was left with snacks, a soft drink and no money. When the father and his other son returned after five hours of hiking, police were waiting with the boy, who was unharmed and was handed back to his father. Officers warned the dad he could be held criminally liable, and he expressed remorse. Two men died last month while climbing Mount Fuji. In 2024, authorities implemented an entry fee and capped climber numbers to try to prevent overcrowding.

Shelley Fabares, who starred alongside Elvis Presley in three movies, has died at 82. Fabares’ family confirmed in a statement that she died in Los Angeles on Saturday surrounded by her loved ones. “To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort,” her family said. “She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member, and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.” Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944, Fabares debuted on television as a child star on Letter to Loretta. Later she starred as Mary Stone in The Donna Reed Show before playing Christine Armstrong on the sitcom Coach. In 1965, she appeared opposite Presley in Girl Happy, their first film together, and later co-starred with him in Spinout and Clambake. “We will miss her deeply — not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives,” her family said.

Poison frontman Bret Michaels has canceled the rest of his tour after a “comeback” performance that was supposed to mark his return following emergency surgery. The 63-year-old rocker took the stage in Georgia on Friday, roughly a month after he shared that he was rushed to a hospital for surgery to remove a kidney stone that would not pass on its own. But Michaels’ comeback was short-lived. A statement posted to his Facebook page on Saturday announced that “doctors and paramedics determined immediately after the show that he still needs additional rest and recovery from his recent surgeries.” Michaels’ doctors, Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel, said, “We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being. He wanted to attempt this show, but we feel there is a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery ahead, especially considering the heat and humidity during the summer months and the effect it can have on his blood sugar levels.” The rocker has endured major health scares before, including a 2010 brain hemorrhage followed by a procedure to repair a hole in his heart, according to Fox News.

Sean Grayson, the former Illinois sheriff’s deputy convicted of murdering Sonya Massey, a Black woman who called 911 to report a possible prowler, has died at 32. Attorney Daniel Fultz, who represented Grayson during his murder trial, said he died around noon on Sunday, according to NBC News. Grayson had been six months into his 20-year sentence after being found guilty last October of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Massey in 2024. He had been battling Stage 4 colon cancer that spread to his liver and lungs, as well as rectal cancer. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied him medical release in July, according to NBC News. It was not immediately known what caused Grayson’s death or whether cancer was a factor. The Daily Beast has reached out to Fultz for comment. On July 6, 2024, Grayson and another sheriff’s deputy, who was not charged, responded to Massey’s home after she called 911. Inside, Grayson instructed Massey to remove a pot of boiling water from the stove. When she told him, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” Grayson drew his gun and threatened to shoot her. Massey apologized and ducked behind a kitchen counter before Grayson shot her three times.

A woman who survived a shark attack in Sydney has revealed the grisly details of the ordeal. Leah Stewart, 34, was attacked by a great white shark while she was swimming between the safety flags at Sydney’s Coogee Beach on June 13. The mother-of one spent two weeks in a coma and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one of her arms. Stewart told Australia’s 60 Minutes that her survival instincts kicked in when she thought of her one-year-old daughter, August. “Its face was horrific–I will never forget. It was a monster,” Stewart said of the shark. “It was holding onto my leg. All I was thinking of was August and I thought, `She’s not going to have a mum,’” she added in a preview of the full interview that will air next week. Stewart, who works as a teacher, said through tears, “I couldn’t handle that. I did not want her to grow up without a mum. I just thought, I’ve got to fight it and do everything I can to be here.” A fundraiser for Stewart has now raised close to US$400,000, which will be used to support her recovery process and to access prosthetics and rehabilitation. She said the money will help her stay in her own home as she accesses medical treatment. “I will forever be grateful for everything, and everyone, I’ve been given,” Stewart said of the money raised. “You’ve inspired me to get better, not bitter.”

The father of a U.S. sailor deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln for over nine months was detained by ICE on Saturday. Luis Manuel Aviles, 48, was arrested after leaving his house to take his car to the mechanic, his wife, Argelia Aviles, told the Associated Press. She said her husband, who is a handyman in Key West, Florida, has a permit to work in the United States. He is originally from Nicaragua and has lived in the U.S. for 19 years. His son Joshua Aviles wrote in a Facebook post that he was on the USS Abraham Lincoln “fighting for a country that has given me everything” when he got the call about his father’s detention. The Lincoln has been at the center of controversy over conditions aboard the ship after its deployment stretched far beyond its originally scheduled end date. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other administration officials have downplayed the concerns raised by service members and their families. “This is heartbreaking for me. I don’t know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly treated like a criminal,” Joshua Aviles wrote in his Facebook post. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that “having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation’s laws.”

Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” he’s “testing the waters” and considering a run for president. The Democratic senator said a widespread desire to stray from the status quo is what got Donald Trump elected, and is what Democrats need to champion in 2028. “Democrats really need to stand for something, we need to be against the status quo,” he told host Kristen Welker. Van Hollen recently campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed in his primary campaign for a Senate seat in Michigan. El-Sayed, 41, a progressive, is largely viewed as an outside of the status quo candidate. “That’s why I’ve been kicking the tires as I look at 2028 because I don’t think the Democratic Party has answered the call about how we’re going to make sure we have an economy that really does work for everybody, especially working people.” Van Hollen has served as a senator for Maryland since 2017.
