At least 12 people were killed in Sicily on Sunday as storms tearing through Italy caused mudslides and flooding, bringing the death toll up to 29 since last week. Nine of the latest victims were members of two families who were reportedly vacationing in Casteldaccia for the long All Saint’s Day holiday weekend when a river burst and submerged homes. Italian media reported that the sole survivor in one family was a man who had walked outside to take his dogs for a walk. Once the floodwaters came pouring out, he reportedly survived by clinging to a tree and then wound up on the roof of another house. A 1-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a teenager inside his house died in the flooding. Several other people staying in the area had escaped the flood by leaving earlier in the day. Three other people, including a German couple, died when their vehicles were swept away by floodwaters. An investigation has been opened to determine if human error, such as a failure to properly drain the river, played a role in the flooding.
