Mississippi polls are seeing significant early turnout Tuesday, as many citizens gather to exercise their vote over the controversial Initiative 26, also known as “the Personhood amendment.” Initiative 26 aims to legally define the beginning of life as conception, which would interfere with abortion, certain forms of birth control, and, in some cases, in vitro fertilization. The vote’s controversy helped draw voters in, and early polls indicate it will pass despite that clergy and other church officials are divided over it—with even some pro-life groups calling it “too extreme.”
