German Chancellor Angela Merkel may be the guest of honor in Washington right now, but President Obama met quietly on Tuesday with another world leader, the crown prince of Bahrain. Things have been calm in the small Middle Eastern country since Saudi Arabia intervened to help put down protests. Obama met Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, considered the most liberal of Bahrain’s rulers, for 15 minutes to shore up his position with Bahrain’s leaders without appearing too cozy with them. Obama “emphasized the importance of following through on the government's commitment to ensuring that those responsible for human-rights abuses will be held accountable," the White House said after the meeting.
