President Obama spoke out against the U.S. Embassy attacks in Libya that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, saying that the United States “condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack.” But he added that the event would not “break the bonds” that exist between the U.S. and Libya. Hillary Clinton also condemned the attack, calling it “a senseless act of violence.” She added, “Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: there is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.” Before Stevens’s death was confirmed, Mitt Romney’s campaign had accused President Obama of “sympathizing” with the attackers after the Cairo embassy issued a statement that condemned individuals who seek to “hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” The Obama campaign defended itself against Romney, saying they were “shocked” that Romney would use Stevens’s death to score a political point.
