A new species of dinosaur has been discovered in a 69 million-year-old rock deposit in Alaska, researchers say. The dinosaur was a type of hadrosaur, a plant-eating, duck-billed animal that lived in herds. The animal grew to as much as 30 feet long, lived in darkness for months at a time, and likely walked on its hind legs, though it could walk on four legs as well. “It appears that a herd of young animals was killed suddenly, wiping out mostly one similar-aged population to create this deposit,” said Pat Druckenmiller, earth-sciences curator at the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks.
