Thirty-three tourists were rescued Friday after being stranded in cable cars overnight above Mont Blanc’s glaciers in the French Alps. An initial rescue operation via helicopter was suspended due to dwindling light. The passengers were the last of 110 people who were trapped Thursday afternoon when the cables became tangled during high winds. The cable cars got stuck at an altitude of 12,468 feet. A police officer said the 36 cars were stranded across three miles of cable. “The extent of this rescue operation is simply unbelievable,” he said.
