The mother of an 8-year-old girl who died in Border Patrol custody has said she repeatedly begged for her to be taken to a hospital. Now, the feds are confirming that Anadith Tanay Reyes Alvarez—who had sickle cell anemia and a heart problem and was being treated for the flu—was seen by medical staff three times on the last day of her life before she was finally transferred to a hospital. The child, who is from Honduras, complained of vomiting and stomach pains and then had a seizure before that happened—raising questions about how Customs and Border Patrol responded. Acting Commissioner Troy Miller said the agency is taking interim steps while a review is underway. “We must ensure that medically fragile individuals receive the best possible care and spend the minimum amount of time possible in CBP custody,” he said.
