In a new interview with BBC Radio 1, rapper Jay-Z spoke out about Trump’s “joke” presidency and paid homage to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, who committed suicide in July. In his interview with radio presenter Clara Amfo, Jay-Z discussed the recent release of his album, 4:44, and how to cope with recent political events in the U.S. “I’m just looking forward to what’s next after that, because usually when things are darkest, then light is on its way. I’m not fearful,” he said. Jay-Z appeared to reference the president without overtly naming him. “I believe that we are resilient, especially us as black people, and especially the culture,” he said. “We’ve been through so much more than this guy… This guy, I’m looking at him like, man, this is a joke, with all—I can’t even say ‘with all due respect’—with all disrespect… He’s not a very sophisticated man, especially when it comes to the idea of ‘until everyone is free, no one is free.’ Period. That’s just a fact.” The rapper cautioned that, “We are all linked [in] some kind of way… If you oppress a certain people, everyone is in danger, karmically, and in real life.” After the interview, Jay-Z performed in honor of the late Bennington.
