Still reeling from a devastating earthquake earlier this week, Mexico City on Saturday was hit by a 6.1-magnitude quake, sending residents fleeing from buildings and temporarily halting rescue efforts. The United States Geological Survey said the latest quake hit near Juchitan, a tropical region of Oaxaca state. The director of Mexico’s disaster agency said it was an aftershock of an 8.1-magnitude quake that struck on Sept. 7. More than 300 people have been killed in two separate earthquakes this month, with rescue and recovery efforts still underway after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake left a trail of destruction on Tuesday. No new casualties were immediately reported following Saturday’s tremors, but authorities said rescue work was put on hold to ensure workers don’t get injured. Nataniel Hernandez, a survivor of the Sept. 7 earthquake, told the Associated Press the latest tremors were the strongest he’s felt since the earlier quake, but added that “since Sept. 7 it has not stopped shaking.”
