British filmmaker Peter Greenaway’s digital transformation of Paolo Veronese’s celebrated masterpiece, The Wedding at Cana, is one of the highlights of the current Venice Biennale. Greenaway’s theatrical vision, which includes light, sound, illusion, and analysis, is projected on a replica of the 16th century painting in Benedictine refectory on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The painting, which depicts Jesus’ first miracle of the turning of water into wine, is itself a digital replica of the original that was seized from this site by Napoleon in 1797 and sent to the Louvre. The massive painting and dramatic Palladian setting are spectacularly brought to life with images, music, words, animations, and other special effects.
