Would a search engine by any other name search as exhaustively? Google is testing that assumption. In honor of Topeka, Kansas, which changed its name to Google last month, Google changed its name to Topeka as of 1 a.m. Thursday. As Google Mayor Bill Bunten put it, "Even Google recognizes that all roads lead to Kansas, not just yellow brick ones." In its press release, Topeka CEO Eric Schmidt said that just as the word topeka "derives from a term used by the Kansa and Ioway tribes to refer to 'a good place to dig for potatoes,' we'd like to think that our Web site is one of the Web's top places to dig for information." Schmidt added that Topeka employees, once known as "Googlers," "should be referred to as either 'Topekers' or 'Topekans' depending on the result of a board meeting that's ongoing at this hour."
