Despite the surrender of the protest leaders, at least six people were killed in riots that still raged in Bangkok even after a military operation swept the streets and reclaimed the area from the anti-government Red Shirt demonstrators. Protesters set fire to 27 buildings and attacked the Channel 3 television station, forcing about 100 employees to be rescued by helicopters after being trapped on the roof. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva imposed a curfew on the city and 24 provinces from 8 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday. In northeastern Thailand, three journalists were among the 50 people wounded in clashes, and one Italian journalist was reported among the dead. Fighting was reported in at least seven other provinces of the country.
