Military Attacks Rolling Stone

Did Rolling Stone commit a journalistic crime in publishing Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s candid remarks? Some military officials say yes. “Many of the sessions were off-the-record and intended to give a sense" of how the team operated, a senior military official told The Washington Post. The official went on to stress that, according to the command’s own review of the interviews, none of the "salacious political quotes" in the Michael Hastings’ controversial story were made during official interviews. Rolling Stone Executive Editor Eric Bates rejects the idea that the magazine broke any rules: "In every case in this story there were multiple times in which there were express requests for off the record and background or not-for-attribution and we abided in every instance.” McChrystal has yet to publicly comment on the article.
