Hurricane Alex, who was just upgraded from tropical storm, is headed toward the western Gulf of Mexico and will likely hit southern Texas or northeastern Mexico on Wednesday or early Thursday. Scientists say Alex is moving erratically, but basically westward with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. President Obama has issued a federal emergency declaration for Texas ahead of Alex’s landfall. Though, luckily for living things in the Gulf, the hurricane will not directly hit the BP oil spill, but the storm is making cleanup efforts difficult by sending 12 foot waves into the area. Oil-skimming ships were sent back to land in response. Alex is the first June hurricane to form in the Atlantic in since 1995.
