On Tuesday, in the first deaths since President Obama declared the end of combat operations in Iraq on August 31, a gunman wearing an Iraq army uniform shot and killed two Americans—and wounded nine more—near the city of Tuz, about 130 miles north of Baghdad, according to the U.S. military. Army Major General Tony Cucolo, the commander of U.S. forces in northern Iraq, said it was "an isolated incident" and stressed that the shooting is "certainly not reflective of the Iraqi Security Forces in Salah ad-Din." While the last official U.S. combat troops left in early August, about 50,000 remain in Iraq. According to an Associated Press count, the death toll since the war began in March 2003 is now 4,418.
