Tens of thousands of progressives gathered on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall in a bid to rival Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally in scale, as well as fire up Democratic voters who lack enthusiasm going into the midterm elections. The four-hour One Nation Working Together is supported by more than 400 groups, which organizers say are a diverse bunch that don’t normally work together, such as conservative black churches and gay-rights groups, for example, or a miners' union and environmental groups. Benjamin Jealous, head of the NAACP, a major organizer of the rally, says the goal is to show Americans are concerned about a “lack of civility in public discourse,” and that marchers are unified in wanting to work through differences to solve the country’s problems. In front of the Capitol, immigration-reform supporters blared bachata music. Speakers decried politicians’ lack of compassion for the unemployed. One marcher carried a sign reading "Jesus Christ is a Liberal."
