A volcano erupted on the Indonesian island of Java on Tuesday, killing at least 18 people, while just 800 miles away, off the coast of Sumatra, a devastating tsunami left over 100 dead. The volcano, Mount Merapi, began to erupt on Tuesday evening, forcing thousands of people who live on its slopes to evacuate. There are now at least 500 people missing; authorities hope that most of them are simply dislocated. When the volcano last erupted in 1994, 60 people died. When it erupted in 1930, 1,300 people died. Among the dead are a 2-month-old baby and several others killed by burns from the hot ash.
