Pakistani citizens are fleeing the tribal area of Mohmand, near the Afghan border, amid tense fighting between government troops and militant forces. At least 20,000 people have abandoned the region, which has long been a haven for the Taliban and al Qaeda. Pakistani troops have been using helicopters and heavy weapons to pound suspected militant hideouts. Sixty to 70 militants have been killed so far, officials said. The fleeing citizens are clearing out of the area to avoid landmines and other hazards. Many have gone to two nearby camps for refugees.
