A massive shakeup is coming for the Palestinian Authority, sources say, with the entire cabinet expected to hand in their resignation Monday. The move, along with Sunday’s sudden call for new presidential and legislative elections, is thought to be a reaction to the rapidly spreading seeds of revolt in the Middle East, where Tunisia and Egypt have each shaken off longtime leaders. “There will be massive change in the composition of the government,” one source said. The cabinet, which was formed in 1993, oversees the West Bank, while Hamas controls the Gaza Strip. Its credibility, though, has been called into question due to stalled peace talks with Israel, and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad is said to have wanted the cabinet’s resignation for some time.
