Detroit schools might start to look like college lecture halls soon. State education officials ordered the emergency financial manager of Detroit Public Schools to close half the city’s schools and consolidate the students. The emergency plan would eliminate the district’s $327 million deficit by 2014, but it may also increase class size to 60 students. In 2007, the average American primary school classroom had 23.1 students.
