The folks at Fort Meade aren’t the only people looking at your data. New documents released by The Guardian reveal that the NSA shares raw intelligence with Israel, including data from American citizens. Israel was supposed to handle the data according to U.S. law and not deliberately target Americans, but these aren’t legal obligations. Data from U.S. officials has much stricter protections: Israel was required to “destroy upon recognition” any communication from a U.S. official. The documents say that Israel was a valuable intelligence partner, it was also “the third most aggressive intelligence service against the U.S.,” spying on the U.S. to learn its positions on the Middle East.
