Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called for an emergency European summit this week to discuss the migrant crisis after a boat carrying as many as 700 men, women and children capsized off the Libyan coast on its way to Europe late Saturday. The Italian Coast Guard had rescued 28 people as of early Sunday. Officials also recovered 24 bodies. Italian officials said a Bangladeshi survivor told them as many as 950 people were aboard the overcrowded boat, including hundreds who were locked in the hold by smugglers. If the death toll is as high as feared, it would be one of the worst disasters in the Mediterranean and bring the total number of dead migrants in 2015 to 1,500.
