Dr. Howard W. Jones, Jr., the doctor who pioneered the in vitro fertilization process, died at age 104 on Friday. In 1981, Jones and his wife, Georgeanna, tested the program they'd jointly created, which resulted in the birth of Elizabeth Carr, the first IVF-conceived baby in the United States. Jones continued to call Carr on her birthday and keep in touch with her parents for years. The esteemed doctor continued to teach in Virginia and was in the middle of his 13th book when he died of respiratory failure.
