Magnitude-6.7 Quake Hits Northeast India

A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck northeast India near the Myanmar border early on Monday, killing at least six people and injuring more than 100 others. Authorities said three people were killed in the Manipur state capital Imphal while another three died in other parts of the state. The quake's epicenter was in Tamenglong region of Manipur state, India's Meteorological Department said. Police said the quake caused damage to several buildings. Tremors were felt in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, and Gauhati, the capital of Assam state. The USGS initially reported a preliminary 6.8 magnitude quake.
