California’s Kern County has settled a $1 million civil lawsuit after a sheriff’s deputy sexually assaulted a 21-year-old woman. It’s the second violent case the Southern California sheriff’s office has been forced to settle in one week, The Guardian reports. The settlement comes after Sheriff’s Deputy Gabriel Lopez, then 28, was found guilty of making the woman strip in her bedroom and then assaulting her. He had arrested the woman’s boyfriend at the home earlier that day, then returned to commit the crime, court documents indicate. He was sentenced to two years in prison for that assault and then another a few days later. Lopez has also been accused of sexually assaulting another woman, aged 79, who died recently.
