In the wake of the historic Brexit win in the United Kingdom on Friday, which saw the U.K. become the first of the 28-nation bloc to opt out, some European leaders demanded their respective nations hold similar referenda. Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders called for the Netherlands to follow suit and hold its own referendum on EU membership “as quickly as possible.” France’s National Front leader Marine Le Pen echoed similar sentiments, tweeting “Victory for freedom” and saying the French must also hold an EU referendum now. If other nations decide to hold such referenda, analysts fear there could be major instability as the EU falls apart.
