NBC News reported Tuesday evening that President-elect Donald Trump’s team has requested top-secret security clearance for his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s husband and the publisher of the New York Observer. The clearance would allow Kushner, who played a major role in Trump’s presidential campaign, to sit in on the presidential daily brief—unprecedented access for someone who is not an official member of the White House staff.
Trump is also reportedly seeking clearance for his adult children, who plan to remain in New York and take over his business interests there. A 1967 nepotism law prohibits presidents from hiring members of their immediate family to work in the federal government and includes sons-in-law in addition to other immediate relatives.
