A military psychologist has refused to recommend that the Army change Chelsea Manning's gender to female in her military records, a new lawsuit from the whistleblower’s lawyers at the ACLU revealed Tuesday. Manning, currently serving 35 years in a military prison for leaking classified documents, has asked to change her gender on military records, which would allow her to wear a hairstyle that represents her gender identity. Manning is currently prohibited from growing her hair longer than two inches, the maximum allowed for male-identified inmates. She has reportedly attempted suicide twice this year, citing mistreatment in the men's prison. The prison psychologist did not explain why she refused Manning's request to change the gender on her records. In September, Manning's legal team announced that the Army had agreed to provide her with gender-confirmation surgery, although it is unclear when the procedure will take place.
