U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an independent investigation into a Saudi-led coalition airstrike in Yemen that left at least 50 children dead and 77 injured. Thursday’s strike hit a bus carrying children from a summer camp in a busy market area in the northern Majz District, U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said. Condemning the attack, Guterres called for “an independent and prompt investigation” into the incident, Haq said. In the statement, Guterres added that all parties must “respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, in particular the fundamental rules of distinction, proportionality, and precautions in attack.” The U.S. State Department called on the Saudi-led coalition, which it has supported, “to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident,” spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. “We take all credible accounts of civilian casualties very seriously.”
