Christine Hallquist Becomes First Transgender Gubernatorial Nominee in History

Christine Hallquist passed the first major hurdle in her quest to become the nation’s first transgender governor on Tuesday night. The former energy company CEO defeated three candidates, including 14-year-old Ethan Sonneborn, to capture the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Vermont. According to her campaign website, she supports fighting cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, a $15 minimum wage, and working toward a universal health care system. Hallquist will face incumbent Republican Gov. Phil Scott, whose approval rating in the state recently dropped substantially, which some attributed to his signing of tighter gun control bills. Scott, seen as a moderate who worked with Democrats in the state, is still heavily favored to be elected.
