Google Doles Out $20 million to 25 Charities

Google announced this week it is donating $20 million to 25 charities instead of spending the money on gifts and lavish parties for their advertising partners. “Because charities are experiencing their toughest year in decades, we have committed $20 million to helping those who help us all,” the company announced. “Our gift to you is a gift to them. Happy Holidays.” But Brian Reich, a blogger and nonprofit expert at, says the money would have been better spent helping charities and non profits “understand how to navigate our rapidly changing, information-driven world.” In one of the worst years for charity fundraising, Google could help non profits rethink their approaches to information, organizing, and fundraising through embracing technology.
