Putin: Gays Will Be Safe at Sochi

During a question-and-answer session on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that gay people in Russia should not fear for their safety as long as they “just leave kids alone, please.” Gay rights in Russia have come under scrutiny in the run-up to the Winter Olympics, especially after Russia passed a law last year which has been used to ban gay rights marches and the discussion of gay issues in TV and newspapers. For some reason, this doesn’t seem like quite the reassurance gays were looking for.
