Clifton Truman Daniel was greeted by a mixed reception in Tokyo on Friday, where he met with survivors of the atomic bombing of Japan during World War II. Authorized by his grandfather, former president Harry Truman, the bombings took place 67 years ago, and are estimated to have killed over 200,000 people. The attending survivors were said to have "generally welcomed" the visit, though a 77-year-old female survivor commented, "I would like him to know that some of those who lost their family members in the bombings will never forgive (the United States) no matter what." Daniel, who referred to the visit as a "good first step towards healing old wounds," also defended his grandfather's use of the bombs: "I can't second-guess my grandfather...(but) there is no right decision in war."
